Baja Reflections
Baja Wrap-Up: What We Learned After Driving the Entire Peninsula
“If you wanted comfort, you could’ve stayed home.”
That line kept coming back to me throughout this trip.
Because the truth is—if you’re choosing Baja, you’re already doing something most people won’t. You’re choosing the unknown. You’re choosing the uncomfortable. And because of that, you’re opening yourself up to experiences that are bigger, richer, and more meaningful than anything you could’ve planned.
Everything you want really does live on the other side of your fears.
And Baja? It will test that.
Take a Beat When You Arrive
One of the biggest things we learned…
When you pull into a new spot—don’t rush it.
Give it 24 hours.
Every place in Baja has its own rhythm.
Some are quiet. Some are social. Some are dog-friendly chaos, others are peaceful and slow.
Instead of expecting the place to match your energy, take a step back and feel it out… then adjust to it.
That’s when things start to click.
Know Your Rig—and Trust Your Gut
Baja will absolutely push you as a driver.
There were roads we looked at and thought, “There’s no way.”
And then… we did them.
But here’s the key—know your limits.
Know your rig. Know your skill level. And when something doesn’t feel right? Listen to that.
Your gut is usually right.
At the same time, don’t underestimate yourself. You’re likely capable of more than you think—and Baja has a way of proving that to you.
Don’t Skip the Street Food
This one’s non-negotiable.
If you skip the taco stands and street food… you’re missing Baja.
Full stop.
We get it—there’s always that hesitation. So if probiotics make you feel better, take them (we did). But then go all in.
Because wow… this is where the culture lives.
Some of our best meals weren’t in restaurants. They were on the side of the road, plastic chairs, paper plates, and the kind of food you think about long after you’ve left.
But Also… Treat Yourself
On the flip side—you don’t need to spend a lot to experience Mexico.
But… set aside a little budget for one or two elevated dining experiences.
Mexico has some incredibly talented chefs, and those moments? They stick with you.
For us, that was dinner at The Green Room in Todos Santos.
It was perfection. One of those “this is exactly why we do this” kind of nights.
Would We Do It Again?
100% yes.
We’re already planning the next trip.
And could we live here?
Also yes. (But maybe that’s just the realtor in us always looking at property 😉)
The Fear vs. Reality of Baja
Here’s something that really surprised us…
The farther we got from the border, the less fear we had.
By the time we reached the southern tip—after driving the entire peninsula—we could confidently say this:
Most of our fears were unfounded.
They were built from headlines, media, and “what if” conversations—not from reality.
Because the reality?
Was welcoming.
Was manageable.
Was far less intimidating than we expected.
The “What Ifs” Get Answered
All those questions you have before going?
“What if we need a vet?”
“What about groceries?”
“What if something goes wrong?”
We had them too.
And every single one got answered—easily.
We found vets. Dog groomers. Grocery stores. Mechanics. Everything you need to live—not just travel.
And we found them with openness, curiosity, and just asking.
A Full Circle Moment
I still remember leaving Canada and Gerald turned to me and said,
“I can’t believe we’re doing this.” (one of our very first videos!)
And then, sitting at The Green Room near the end…
“I can’t believe we DID this.”
That shift? That’s what Baja gives you.
Why Slow Travel Matters
Baja changed the way we think about travel.
Slow travel builds community.
It creates space for real connections—with people, with places, and honestly… with yourself.
And it’s something you just don’t get the same way when you’re rushing, caravanning, or checking boxes.
Final Thought
If you’re on the fence about Baja…
This is your sign.
Lean into the discomfort.
Trust yourself.
Go experience it.
Because the best parts of this journey?
They weren’t planned.
And that’s exactly what made them unforgettable.
